Privacy Background

Here are some highlights on my privacy work.Privacy

  • I have recently completed a six-year term serving on the Direct Marketing Association's Ethics Policy Committee.  The committee is responsible for drafting Ethical Guidelines for Acceptable Business Practices to which all DMA members must adhere.  The guidelines change over time based on timely issues, conformance with federal laws and changes within the industry.  This presented me a unique opportunity to weigh in on privacy issues and to help formulate best practices for the industry.

  • I've participated in many DMA privacy summits and have had the opportunity to meet with members of the FTC, legislators, the FBI, and consumer protection agencies.

  • In a consulting capacity I serve as Chief Privacy Officer for DKI Direct.  The DKI agency focuses developing email relationship programs for pharmaceutical clients.  I provide guidance and comments on any privacy issues that surface, review programs as they relate to privacy, and keep them up-to-date on state, local and international legislation.  I also brief their clients on privacy issues through private seminars.

  • I was an expert witness expert witness for a major email deployment company in a suit against a leading email blocking and blacklisting service.  My role as an expert witness was to provide a point of view on the vendor's privacy and permission standards.

  • I was recently an expert witness in an email patent lawsuit.  A provider of email deployment services was sued for infringement by the email patent holder.  The judge ruled in our favor.

  • I speak around the country on privacy and permission issues.  For example, I addressed the Direct Marketing Association of Washington on "The Data Privacy Brouhaha: What It Means to You."  I led a 2-day seminar entitled "Success Strategies for Internet and Email Marketing" for National Seminars - the seminar was held in approximately 20 cities around the US.  The seminar addressed many areas but it also included best practices, privacy legislation, privacy policies and permission.

  • I have been quoted on privacy and interactive direct marketing issues by several leading publications such as The New York Times, Advertising Age, and more.

  • I have served on the board of directors of the Internet Alliance (IA) from 1994 - 2001.  Initially, this group was formed to deal with online industry issues including privacy.  The IA's mission was to help the industry build the confidence and trust necessary for the Internet to become the global, mass market medium of the 21st century.  To achieve this, the IA focused on public policy, advocacy, consumer education and media relations.  Other board members included representatives from AOL, Prodigy, AT&T, Consumer Reports, Citibank, Bell South and other leading companies.

  • I served on the board of directors of the Responsible Email Communications Alliance (RECA) from 2000 to 2001.  Our goal was to establish privacy protection standards for email marketers.

  • I drafted CompuServe's first comprehensive privacy policy in 1994. Since then I have worked with many other companies to both craft online privacy policies and to incorporate best practices into day-to-day operations.
